If you’re spending an entire summer in an exotic locale, a few weeks in a beach house, or every weekend in the Hamptons, you’re probably spending some serious vacation time in a summer rental. Make the most of your vacation home by making it your own – we’ve compiled our 10 favorite tips for transforming a summer rental into a second home.

10. Paint the walls.

Painting one (or four!) walls in a longer term rental is an easy and relatively fast way to change the entire look of the space. Make the work go faster by inviting friends over at the beginning and end of summer for a painting party. Just make sure you’ve got a can of the original color for when you need to paint it back!

9. Paint the furniture.

Brighten up older accessories by adding a quick coat of paint! Coastal inspired colors always work well, or go with a bright blue or yellow in honor of summer.

8. Decorate the entry way.10 Ways to Make Your Summer Property Feel Like Home

Feel at home the minute you walk in the door by designing your entry way with furniture and accessories you love. We’re particularly fond of benches during the summer season – they’re the perfect place to park your beach bag when the sun goes down!

7. Make sure you have at least 3 light sources in major rooms.10 Ways to Make Your Summer Property Feel Like HomeListen, overhead lighting just isn’t going to cut it anymore. You’re better than that. Make your spaces feel more comfortable and homey by adding at least 3 light sources. A table lamp, a floor lamp, and a chic chandelier should do the trick nicely.

6. Add your personal touch.

5. BYOB: Bring Your Own Bedding.

Alright, this one is for both design and hygiene purposes. Bringing your own sheets, pillows, and blankets is always a safe bet; not only will you know the quality (for a refresher on how to pick the perfect sheets, head here!) but you’ll also ensure that nobody else has drooled on that pillow…

4. Use your signature scent.

For some it’s the smell of a your mother’s top-secret chocolate chip cookie recipe baking in the oven, and for others it’s the scent of our favorite luxe candles. We’re particularly lusting over Bibliotheque by Byredo.

3. Rearrange the furniture if you need to.

Feel free to rearrange the furniture in the space to suit your needs. Not crazy about the weird antique side table next to the couch? Put it in the closet for the summer and replace with something more to your tastes! You don’t have to go overboard and replace every item in the house to make a huge impact with new pieces.

2. Don’t forget about your kitchen!

Pack your french press with you before you head to the beach for the weekend!  Bring your favorite kitchen implements and tools to your rental – you’ll be far more likely to cook if you have tools that you feel comfortable with.

1. Bring your own pretty little toiletries.

If you’re using someone else’s soap and shampoo, you’ll feel like you’re living out of a hotel. Make yourself at home and bring your own pretty little soaps, dishes, and flowers. It will make a world of difference (and your hair will look better, too!)
