Get the Look for Less: Styles from Design Miami/ Basel for a Fraction of the Price

Maybe you’ve heard of this little art fair that occurs three times a year in three different locations, called Art Basel. (It’s only one of the largest art fairs in the world, showcasing the highest quality works in modern and contemporary art). Art Basel brings in the most prominent art collectors, museum directors, curators, and social elite, such as Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Well, Art Basel’s lesser-known counterpart, Design Miami just wrapped up it’s show in Basel. Design Miami/Basel is the global forum for design, featuring museum-quality exhibitions of twentieth and twenty-first century furniture, lighting and objets d’art. You can imagine that these items cost a pretty penny to own. Since the average design lover probably can’t afford to jet off to Basel and spend millions on the highest end product in design, we’ve handpicked some of our favs from the shows, and provided some similar options that will help you get the look for a whole lot less.

Scroll through to find deals on the styles of Design Miami/Basel!

THE LOOK:

Jean Prouvé, Caféteria n°300 demountable chair, variation Tropique, 1951

large-4

Jean Prouvé’s designs have clearly made a lasting impression. He played a major role in the post-war Modernist period and created timeless designs that are still emulated today. His cafeteria chair available for auction at Design Miami/ Basel is probably a little bit over the normal shopper’s prize range, but Dot & Bo offers an affordable alternative.

THE LOOK:

Reinier Bosch, W-console, 2014

large-2

Okay, so you might not be able to find something with the mirror-polished gleam of Reinier Bosch’s large ‘W’ console, but a marquee sign lights up, too, and makes a major statement in your space, so it’s almost just as good (and at least half the price).

THE LOOK:

Jos Devriendt, Night and Day 77, 2015

large-3

We can easily envision this little mushroom lamp sitting on our nightstand. It’s super cute but cute is definitely not always affordable. IKEA, however, has a number of similar options. It may not have a mushroom shade, but the shape and material are comparable, they both give off a soft mood lighting and you can own the IKEA version for the small price of $12.99. We’ll take it.

THE LOOK:

Pol Chambost, Escargot Jug Vase No. 894, 1953

large-7

Like many of the items at Design Miami/Basel, this vase is a twentieth-century antiquity, but there are plenty of modernist red vases out there that can satisfy your whimsy as well. The below vase is also a vintage piece from around the same decade, so your appetite for antiques can still be met regardless of the price tag.

Take Jaime Hayon’s racket mirror and turn it into a DIY! It’s pretty easy to transform an old tennis racket into a mirror and you can learn how here. Or if you want to purchase one, Etsy has a plethora. (They look great if you pair two or three together!)

We all dream of one day being able to attend Art Basel and Design Miami/Basel, but until then we’ll just have to pretend. And as you can see, pretending to be a wealthy design collector/connoisseur can be easier than it seems.
