A hit show on ABC and a spin-off to come. A letter of recommendation from Michelle Obama. Award nominations from MTV, BET and the Screen Actors Guild. Oh and getting accepted to every college she applied to. Black-ish star Yara Shahidi just might be having the best senior year of any high schooler in America. But there was one thing missing: A room to come home to.

“We’re going on a year in this house, and I think because I was in this constant state of transition, I never really got around to customizing my room,” Yara says.
That’s pretty surprising, considering the 17-year-old positively hums with creative energy. She collects art books, antiques, sneakers, denim, pieces from her travels. She doodles, photographs, writes, does vision boards. She’s even got an aesthetics folder on her phone with things that inspire her, from anime to “Solange Knowles just being Solange.”
“When you look at the spaces that I inhabit, they’re so opposite of who I am,” Yara says. “As much as I’ve always had a vision, I’m so bad at following through on that.”
Because she’s taking a gap year before heading off to college, she wanted a room that could serve as a more grown-up home base. So Yara teamed up with Laurel & Wolf and PBteen to execute her vision.

Yara collaborated with designer Kimberly Winthrop in between takes on set or on the way to the airport. “When I first started using Laurel & Wolf’s online platform I was like ‘whoa, whoa, whoa.’ I basically got to see my room come to life as it was happening,” Yara says.
The first order of business? Getting organized.
“My room has always been a visual view of my brain. When I have my life together, my room is perfect. But when I’m frazzled, the room is a mess,” she says.
So Kimberly tackled storage first, adding a desk with spacious drawers flanked by bookcases for her to display her favorite pieces. A long, low dresser acts like a stage for displaying her prized art and music books.
Yara spent a summer studying at Oxford University, and it instilled in her a deep appreciation of historic spaces and objects. So Kim created areas to highlight Yara’s antique typewriter, record player and old cameras.
“My new room is more mature and functional for my current lifestyle. Everything in my life is all over the place, so I need a room that not only can I put everything away in, but it also feels comfortable to just live in,” Yara says.
Now she loves curling up on her cozy bed and listening to her favorite playlists, which she’s crafted to fit the different colored lights that she can change in her room. Yellow for reggae, magenta for Frank Ocean, purple for (of course) Prince.

But her favorite piece in the room is her new cork board.
“I come from a vision board family,” Yara says. “Cork boards have been the center of our life, projecting what we want for our futures.”
We can’t wait to see what her bright future holds.
