How to Hygge in the Springtime

March 24, 2017

Crackling wood in a fiery hearth paired with a hot cup of tea, a knit blanket, and a gathering of good friends. Sounds like the final scene in a Christmas movie, right? Well, that’s hygge, the Danish lifestyle trend that’s blown up over the last year. Roughly translating to “cozy,” hygge is all about living a harmonious, happy, and relaxing life by indulging in the comforts of home. Think fuzzy blankets, nubby sweaters, sweet-scented candles, and warm, delicious treats. The Danes insist that hygge is a way to live all year long, but most of the elements and images that are associated with the movement seem pretty wintry to us. So we’ve put together this guide to embracing a hygge life even when the sun is shining bright.

Live by Candlelight

As the Little Book of Hygge states, “There is no faster way to get to hygge than to light a few candles.” And though they’re perfect for brightening those dark winter nights, candles can be used all year long. Stow away your peppermint, cinnamon, and pumpkin scents until next fall and instead, opt for floral fragrances like jasmine, lavender, or honeysuckle. Citrusy scents like grapefruit are also great, especially in the summer when the bugs start to come out.

Do a Spring Clean

As much as we all dread that deep, spring clean, no one can deny the pleasure of a perfectly clean home. And the Danes are all about living clutter-free. Dust all your surfaces, attack those cobweb-filled corners, polish the kitchen, and get rid of anything that doesn’t make you happy. Then take a deep breath, sit back, and enjoy your fresh home.

Let There Be Light

We’re met with longer days and sunnier skies in the spring, so embrace that newfound light by adding window washing to your cleaning list. Then throw open the curtains, crack a window and let that fresh air and springtime light into your home. It’s also a good time to replace your thicker fabrics and darker colors with lighter ones. Swap your heavy bed sheets for soft cotton or linen sets. Replace old throw pillows for those that say spring with plant motifs or florals.

Embrace Nature

One of the mainstays of hygge is bringing a little nature indoors, which is even easier to do in the spring. All of our favorite flowers are finally coming back into season, so start keeping simple arrangements in a few rooms to help you feel more connected to nature. Get a couple new house plants to help purify the air and make your space feel like a personal oasis.

Cooking Fresh

In the winter, we’re all about our comfort foods, but when spring rolls around fresh fruits and veggies start to feel nearly as comforting as a steaming bowl of chili. Keep a bowl of fruit on the table and start experimenting with salads. You can even try growing your own herb garden indoors!

Get Outside

If you have an outdoor space or garden, now is the time to spruce it up for spring. Instead of cozying up on the couch with your morning coffee, start taking it outside. Walk around the neighborhood and admire all of the blooming trees. Pack a picnic with friends and head to your favorite outdoor area. If you’ve been hitting the gym all winter, start doing your workouts outside. There are so many ways to feel hygge in the great outdoors. And that sun beating down on us, definitely helps.
