The sun is shining, the flowers are in full bloom and we’re ready to be outside as often as possible. Unfortunately, not every home comes with a yard, a patio, or even a porch. But if you are lucky enough to have your own outdoor space, now is the time to take advantage of it. So we called upon Laurel & Wolf designer Jennifer Terry, to imagine three outdoor areas that match in style but not in price. To get the budget breakdown on this shabby-chic-meets-contemporary-eclectic patio, read on!

A covered patio in a spacious backyard is basically outdoor goals for everyone. And Jennifer’s design is made to feel like a second living room, complete with eclectic décor and ample seating for guests. “I really wanted a vintage feel for the space, but vintage is tough to pull off outdoors,” she says. “When I think of vintage, I think of peeling paint, imperfect finishes and rust—all things that don’t do well outside!” So Jennifer tried to capture the vintage vibe using reproduction pieces, like a green, iron pot planter and a worn area rug.

With a bit more room in her budget, Jennifer updated the patio using a pair of clean white tables. Their smooth finish is complemented by two mint-toned bullet planters, which add a touch of modernism to the outdoor area. “Since I couldn’t do all vintage, I rounded out the space with eclectic items: poufs, candle holders, lanterns,” Jennifer says.

For her final and most expensive design, Jennifer used the same textiles and throw pillows, but selected pricier seating options, like an updated pair of Adirondack chairs. “Unless you live in a warm climate where you can use your patio year round, cushions need to be stored away for the winter. The thing I love about Adirondack chairs is that they are comfy without needing a cushion,” Jennifer says.

Although she used more expensive pieces, the design looks nearly the same as its affordable counterparts. “I specialize in working with clients on a tight budget,” Jennifer says. “So it was a lot of fun (and actually a little challenging) to spend $10,000!”
