We all know someone who has put our needs before their own. For many of us that person is our parent, who was always there to lift us up or make us feel better when we were ill, or a friend who showed us how to laugh again when we were at our lowest. At Laurel & Wolf, we thought, wouldn’t it be great if we could give back to someone who has been generous with us in a big way?
The holidays present the perfect chance to acknowledge the kindness we receive throughout the year, and an opportunity to repay it, in one way or another. This year, we teamed up with ATG stores to give one lucky stranger the ability to do just that: together, we donated a Classic Design Package and $10,000 in furniture to a winner for our Better to GiveAway. The twist? That stranger had to give this fantastic gift to someone in their life deserving of the present.
Enter Olivia, the kind-hearted winner of our giveaway. Watch the video below to see how we helped her give an amazing gift to a few old friends who helped our winner through the toughest time in her life. And then get the behind-the-scenes look into our Better to GiveAway home makeover!
Olivia first moved to Los Angeles in 2012 with little more than a suitcase. She knew she was meant to live there, but had no idea how to make ends meet. She wouldn’t have to worry for long, though, because her dear friends Kate and Shirin opened their home to Olivia for as long as she needed to get organized, without giving it a second thought. Never forgetting the immediate relief she felt knowing she would have somewhere to sleep, the young LA transplant was overjoyed when we told her she could give the life-changing gift of good design to anyone she wanted.
After an emotional Skype call between our winner and her friends, we immediately got to work. We had the two roommates take our style quiz, choose their designer, and together they finalized their space and ordered everything they needed from ATG Stores. Kate and Shirin were taken aback with Olivia’s gift and eagerly awaited the transformation of their home.
After our team assembled a new living room and breakfast nook for Kate and Shirin, we surprised Olivia with the made-over space. Check out what she saw below:

Olivia was overwhelmed when she opened the door to her friends’ place to discover the bright and beautiful transformation. Jessica Today, the designer Kate and Shirin chose for their project, had taken into account their modern eclectic style quiz result, love of unique pieces, and artistic personalities when designing the space.
For the living room, Jessica made sure to keep the treasures the women couldn’t let go of and paired them with beautiful, new furniture and accessories. Jessica gave new life to Kate and Shirin’s antique Oriental rug, and found a coffee table similar to the one they loved, but in a size that fit the amount of space in the living room. A bright blue couch was a great way to add color to the room, and the use of raw wood, fax fur, and layered rugs gave the space a rich texture that made it feel both hip and homey.

With warm, new furniture and charming accents of greenery, the space now reflects Kate and Shirin more than ever. Jessica softened the kitchen with flowing curtains, and used succulents in place of wall art to give life to the breakfast nook.
Two twin chairs are made to feel different in the living room. Jessica indulged in matching luxe fabrics and patterned pillows to make the neutral color scheme feel cozy and inviting.
Kate and Shirin love the petrified wood wall clock they found at a flea market, but were not sure how to incorporate it into their space. Their designer knew that keeping the area around the piece simple was the perfect way to showcase the clock. Because the dining room is open to the living room, Jessica was sure to carry over the color scheme and bright greenery from room to room.
Ample sunlight filters into both spaces, making Kate and Shirin’s home look refreshed. Their apartment no longer feels dark or chaotic, which allows the friends to feel more relaxed when at home. Because of Jessica’s ability to make their entertaining space more social, they are much more excited to invite people over—they’re proud of their funky, feminine space.
Olivia, Jessica, ATG Stores, and Laurel & Wolf were overjoyed to give the gift of good design to two kind and deserving people, and Kate and Shirin still “can’t believe this is home . . . we have a home!” Yes, it’s absolutely better to give than to receive.
