Tech enthusiast, Annie Kadavy knows a thing or two about bringing tired, age-old businesses into modern times. Just look at her impressive resume working with industry innovators like Warby Parker and ClassPass. So when it came to her own home, Annie was on a mission to bring her historic 1900s walkup into the future in a truly innovative way.

“The house was built right before the big earthquake that hit San Francisco, so it’s been remodeled several times over the last hundred-plus years. It’s like a lot of San Francisco homes, with all of the original moldings, but our style’s a bit more modern. We were really looking for help to bridge those two looks,” says Annie.

So, with the support of the interior designers at Laurel & Wolf, Annie and her husband, Kelton preserved the charm that drew them to the house initially, without letting its traditional architecture define the look of the entire space.

And with a modern design aesthetic comes the need to balance style and practicality — something Annie and Kelton couldn’t come to an agreement on. “Having a third party come in and help us bridge form and function was quite valuable,” says Annie.

In order to help them find a middle ground, their designer provided plenty of seating options, but in mid-century silhouettes and contemporary fabrics like Performance Velvet and Linen Weave. Two square poufs offer additional seating for guests during game day, and add to the modern, yet comfortable vibe that Annie hoped to accomplish in the space.

While Kelton cared most about keeping the space functional for football viewing parties, Annie was much more interested in making everything come together as a whole. Compromise meant giving in on the idea of duel sofas, but accessorizing with decorative objects that are more stylish than they are practical.

A crystal chandelier speaks to the home’s classical side, while the ceramic mounted antlers add a playful, modern twist to the space. Additionally, a mix of vintage books, found objects, and new finds fill the shelves of the built-in bookcases.

Now, with seating for over ten guests and plenty of conversation-starting pieces, there’s no doubt that their house has become the most popular one on the block. “That was one of the reasons we moved into this home. We wanted it to be a place where we could scale up the number of people that we have in that room, but not have it feel too crowded,” says Annie.

And how have the couple’s guests responded to the new look? “We have a lot of friends, especially single guy friends, who come over and are like, ‘Oh my god you’re such grown ups,'” Annie says.
