Have you ever fallen asleep without plugging your phone in? In the modern world, there are few horrors greater than waking up to an uncharged device. But as houses become smarter, we’re starting to say goodbye to technology-related woes like tangled cables, a lack of outlets, or misplaced chargers. Thanks to recent developments in wireless charging—also known as Qi—furniture is moving into the future. From kitchen countertops to bedside tables, these built-in charging hotspots are blurring the lines between tech and design in a beautiful way.

Just last year, IKEA released a line of furniture that helps cut down on cable clutter and allows you to charge where you are. The collection consists of wireless charging nightstands, lamps, and devices that can be installed in any surface so that your chargers can blend seamlessly with your decor.

Not long ago, Starbucks brought wireless charging to select locations. The brilliant idea has caught on in some airports and universities, but it’s only just beginning to take off in the home sphere. The Corian Charging Surface by DuPont charges smartphones, tablets, and more through a transmitter hidden beneath the counter’s surface. The catch?  You’ll have to make some minor renovations if you want one at home; the charging device is only available in Corian countertops. You’ll also need a charging ring for it to work, but if you opt for this innovation, you can simply set your phone on the kitchen counter and come back to a fully replenished device.

Inspired by the process of photosynthesis, Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel created a series of stained glass windows and tabletops that harness energy from the sun to power your devices. The integration of solar technology is key to a sustainable future, and we love that van Aubel’s designs as beautiful as they are functional. How’s that for a bright idea?

A smarter bedside

This chic, mid-century modern-inspired nightstand may look retro, but it’s got some serious tech cred hidden inside. Not only does it juice your device, but it also features integrated speakers, programmable lighting systems that can simulate sunlight, drawers that can be locked and unlocked with you smartphone, motion and temperature sensors, Bluetooth connectivity that enables it to answer your calls, and much, much more. Either Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is becoming a reality or this table is the best roommate ever. Curvilux’s smart nightstand is available for pre-order for $199.
